Billing itself as Halifax’s first “true” north end lofts, Q Lofts is also one of the most energy-efficient large-scale condo buildings in North America. Every element of the design and construction was crafted with an emphasis on minimizing environmental impacts, with the goal of limiting the building’s carbon footprint and keeping energy costs low. Polycorp set out to treat “energy as a valuable resource that needs to be managed and optimized through smart design choices.” Thus, the building was engineered as “an integrated energy system” rather than a “group of unrelated equipment and elements.”
Among features serving this focus are insulating concrete form (ICF) construction and triple-glazed windows for heat preservation, and hot air and grey water energy recovery and re-use. Low-flow plumbing fixtures, duel-flush toilets, and rainwater collection for toilet usage serve as primary water conservation features, while Energy Start appliances, LED and CFL lighting, and sensor-driven computer-controlled common space lighting and master energy control conserve electricity. With Q Lofts using less than 50 percent of the energy consumed by a building constructed to the requirements of the “Model National Energy Code,” residents can be assured that they are living in one of the greenest condo buildings in Halifax, if not all of Canada.
But this appeal to being green does not compromise comfort and style, as the developer included plenty of modern elements and European styling to foster elegant minimalism within each loft. The bright and airy two-level lofts include quartz and marble countertops, custom kitchens, a wide range of flooring options, and modern open tread steel, glass and beechwood staircase. Stylish two-level windows let in plenty of natural light and the outside is easily accessed by private terrace or balcony right outside the open-concept living room. Larger lofts include a second enclosed bedroom or “flex” room and another full bath, and all units come with an underground parking space and storage unit.
